Bedside Table
Closed at the top and open below, a box of very dark Leather Bronze Armani marble stands beside the bed. The upper part is a solid band of stone on all four sides. Under it an opening runs through the box from front to back, lined in walnut, and the box stands on a stone base. From the pillow it is a cube of dark stone with a drawer of wood in it. The walnut is the inside of the stone, the way the lining is the inside of a coat.
Leather Bronze Armani is almost black, with fine lighter veins and a leathered finish that keeps a soft texture under the hand instead of a polish. The sides are thick, so the opening is set in from the outer faces and the walnut lining sits inside the stone with a reveal. Walnut is chosen because it is the one warm colour that holds its own beside a stone this dark, and because a book slid in and out of it every night will not mark it. The lining runs up both sides and across the soffit, so the opening is a box within a box.

It was drawn for the main bedroom, and it takes a lamp, a glass and a phone on the stone and the night's books in the walnut. The hand finds the cool band first and the warm wood second. The box is heavy and does not move when the lamp is switched on in the dark, which is the one thing a bedside table has to do well. The lining is drawn as a separate box inside the stone, because that is what it is.
