Three blocks of milk white marble, each set on a walnut foot drawn back from the edges so the block floats. They are the same unit three times, and they are used three ways: one beside a chair, two pushed together as a low table, three in a row as a bench for objects. The block is the simplest side table there is, and the foot is what keeps it from looking like a plinth, which is what a block of stone on a floor otherwise is.

Each block stands on a foot of walnut veneer set back from every face, and that setback is the whole detail. From standing height the foot disappears and the block hovers a hand's width off the floor; from a chair the band of walnut shows as a dark line under the white. Milk white is a soft white with faint warm veins, honed, and three blocks of one stone read as one family across the room. The foot is veneered rather than solid because it is never seen as wood, only as a shadow with colour in it, and veneer gives that colour evenly on all four sides.

A glass on one, a vase on another: the three in use.

One block, three times, and the room decides what it is.

They live in a living room, where their weight is a virtue: a block of this size does not slide when a glass is set down, and does not need to be lifted to be moved, only pushed. White stone beside a sofa is a small cool surface in a soft room, and three of them are furniture that can be rearranged without a plan.

250 mm square, 400 high; walnut foot set back 20 mm.
