The screen is laid edge to edge on an upright of plum marble, whose lower part thickens into a plinth that stands proud along the foot. The screen sits on that step and fills the width of the stone exactly, so that when it is off the unit reads as a black rectangle on a purple one. The marble is the wall the screen hangs on, brought into the room as a free-standing slab.

Plum marble is a dark purple-brown with fine pale veins, honed. Across a panel this size the veins run as long diagonal lines, and the step of the plinth cuts them, so the two parts read as one stone in two thicknesses. The ledge is deep enough for a small vase or a speaker and shallow enough that nothing on it crosses the screen. Everything that would be hidden in a cabinet is here either in the stone or not in the room.

The step of the plinth at the foot of the panel.

It stands at the foot of a bed, against the wall or away from it, and from the pillows the screen is seen at the right height with the stone below it as a dark ground. From the side the panel is thin and the plinth is thick, which is the whole section in one glance. A screen is the one object in a bedroom that is not chosen by the person who lives there; the stone around it is.

From the side: the thin upright and the thick plinth.

Two thicknesses, one width. The detail is the step, 90 mm, the depth of a hand laid flat, so the ledge can be dusted in one pass and a vase stands on it without crowding the screen. A deeper plinth would turn the unit into a cabinet, and a shallower one would leave the screen with nothing to stand on.

1,450 wide, 1,400 high; panel 110 deep, plinth 200.
