Flower Pot, Cut
One corner is cut back through the middle of a tall column of milk white marble, so the hollow opens to the side and stems grow out of the column as well as up from it. A plain column is a vase; a column with a window in it is a building with a balcony, and the flowers are what lean out.
The walls are 18 mm, with a drainage hole through the floor. The corner is cut back square, through two walls at once, leaving the stone above and below it whole, so the column keeps its strength and its line. The marble is a soft white with faint warm veins, honed so it stays matt beside the flowers. The window is cut after the column is hollowed, with the same square inside corners as the top, so the two openings read as one family.
The window, and a stem leaning out of it.
Empty, it is a white column with a notch, and it can stand that way on a hall table or a windowsill for weeks. Filled, a tall stem goes up through the top and a short one comes out of the side, and the column is seen to be hollow. Water sits in the base below the window, and the inside is left honed so the marks it leaves do not matter.
Empty, as a column.
The detail is where the window sits in the height: through the middle, so there is as much solid stone above the opening as below it and the column stays a column. Cut lower, the pot would read as a stand with a bowl on it; cut higher, as a vase with a broken lip. Halfway, it reads as a window.
127 mm square, 356 high; walls 18 mm.
