Flower Pot, Tapered
Wider at the top than at the base, the pot narrows from six inches square at the rim to a smaller square at the foot, with a V cut taking off one corner at the top. The taper gives the pot a stance, like a vessel that has been filled, and the V gives it a mouth. From above the rim is a square with a bite out of it; from the front the cut is a dark triangle in the green.
The walls are 18 mm, with a drainage hole through the floor. The V is a single flat cut across the front corner, so it reads as one plane and not a chip. The green marble carries brown and gold veins branching across a dark ground, honed so it keeps its depth without shining, and the four tapered faces each show a different stretch of that vein, which is what a solid pot is for.
The rim from above, and the V from the front.
The base is smaller than the top, so the pot has a narrow footprint and a wide mouth, and it stands on a floor or a low plinth rather than a shelf. It takes a small tree, an olive or a fig, in its own inner pot, with the V as the place where a branch leans out. Green stone and green leaves are the same colour in two materials, and the gold veins are the only thing that separates them.
The base, and the pot with a small olive in it.
The detail is the taper itself: about three degrees a side, enough for the eye to read the pot as standing rather than sitting, and little enough that the walls keep their thickness all the way down and the V stays one flat plane. Two squares, one height, one cut.
152 mm square at the top, 114 at the base, 356 high.
