Centre Table
One slope runs from the edge of a square top of very dark Leather Bronze Armani marble to the floor. The slope is marble first, as a skirt under the top, and then black metal legs set flush in the same planes, so the eye reads a single pyramid cut off at the top and standing on its point. The legs land on a square black ring. It is a plinth turned upside down, so that the thing on show is the top and not the base.
Leather Bronze Armani is a dark brown marble, almost black, with fine lighter veins, and it is finished leathered rather than polished: a surface with a low, textured sheen that holds light softly and shows the hand less. The top is chamfered round its upper edge, so the hand meets a bevel and not an arris. The marble skirt continues the slope for the first part of the drop; the four legs take it the rest of the way to the ring on which the table stands.

A centre table carries a few books and a bowl and is walked round all day. Because the base narrows to a ring well inside the edge of the top, feet pass under it and shins never find a leg. The dark stone is the quietest thing in a pale room, and the slope means that from a sofa the table shows its top and nothing else. It is made for a living room, in front of the long seat, at the height of a knee.

The angle of the slope is set once and every part follows it. The detail is the chamfer on the upper edge of the top: a slab of dark stone with a square edge is a block; with its arris taken off it is a lid, and the chamfer catches the light along all four sides, which is the only highlight a leathered surface gives.
