Set into the ceiling, a deep box of dark timber is open below and closed at the bottom by fluted glass over an opal diffuser. From the room it reads as a square well of light in the ceiling, like a roof light in a house that has no roof above it. The fluting breaks the light into vertical lines, so the panel looks like a window to a bright sky rather than a lamp, and that is the whole reason for it.

The section is read from the top down: a light cavity, an acrylic diffuser, a gap, fluted glass, and then a deep timber reveal to the soffit of the box. The gap between the diffuser and the glass is what makes the light even: the diffuser softens it and the flutes draw lines on it, and the reveal below the glass puts the light in a frame, so it reads as depth. The timber is dark so the inside faces of the box do not reflect the light back and the glow stays on the glass.

A window to a sky that is not there.

It is made for a corridor or a bathroom, where there is no window and a flat ceiling light would make the room feel like a cupboard. One panel, centred, gives a ceiling an event, and because the light is diffused and framed it can be left on all day without reading as a lamp. The drawing is exploded from below, with the diffuser and the fluted glass drawn out of the box in their order, which is the order they go in.

450 × 700 mm in plan, 445 deep; glass 8, diffuser 6.
