Mahogany Strips Pod
A low cabinet six feet long in mahogany throughout, whose two doors are faced in fifteen rows of thin strips with a shadow gap between each. The strips are the whole face. From across a room the doors read as a louvred screen; up close they are a stack of thin boards, each with its own grain. It is a long box with a slatted front, like a shuttered window laid on its side.
Each strip is a thin bar of solid mahogany, fixed to battens behind it, and the battens to the door, so the face is built up rather than carved and every gap is a true gap with shadow in it. The top is a single board. The carcass stands on three slab feet, so the box floats a little off the floor and the shadow under it matches the shadows between the strips. The gaps are what make the face read as rhythm rather than as a flat panel.
The strips and their shadow gaps; the pod from the end.
Mahogany is a straight, close-grained red-brown wood that takes a thin section without splitting, which is why the strips can be this slender, and it darkens with light and handling. A cabinet this long needs one material or it becomes a piece of joinery with a decoration on it; here the top, the sides, the feet and the strips are all the same wood.
It is a sideboard and a television stand and a bench for books, set against a wall at the height of a seated person's knee. Two doors open on the whole length of storage. The top takes a vase and a stack of books, and the strips take the raking light of a window in the afternoon, when every gap throws its own thin shadow.
Six feet long; strips 8 × 25 mm on 13 mm battens.
