Hanger Hook
A hook is a J, and this one is cut from a single piece of milk white marble left over from a larger job. The plate rises straight, then leans forward in one slope to the top, so the upper part stands away from the wall and a coat on a hanger clears it. At the bottom the J curls out with an inside radius of 20 mm, which is the radius a hanger hook or a dressing-gown loop wants. Two countersunk stainless screws through the plate hold it to the wall, their heads flush with the stone.
The screws are not hidden. They are part of the drawing. A marble hook that pretended to be glued to the wall would be a lie about how it holds; this one shows the two points that carry the load, and the brushed steel heads sit in the honed white like two full stops. The stone is a soft white with faint warm veins, and it is used here because an offcut this size is strong enough across its grain to carry a coat on the J, and too small to be anything else.
The two screws, flush; the curve of the J.
It goes behind a bathroom door, beside a bed or in a hall, anywhere a single garment waits to be picked up. The hand finds the curve first and the plate second, and a dressing gown hangs from it the way it would from a timber peg, only cooler to the touch. One hook, one garment: it is not a rail.
A dressing gown on the J.
The detail is the lean. It is enough to bring the top of the hook off the wall by the width of a hanger's hook and no more, so the coat hangs clear and the stone still reads as a flat plate with one fold in it. The wall is drawn in, because the hook is nothing without it.
178 × 51 × 18 mm; the top leans 26 mm forward.
