Two deep wells are cut down into a cube of green marble just over four inches on a side: one for the brushes, one for the paste. The cube is the simplest thing a block of stone can be, and the wells are the only mark on it. It stands on the basin like a small building with two courtyards, and the brushes lean in the courtyards the way poles lean in a yard.

Both wells are carved from the one block, with a thin divider between them and the walls kept thin around them, so the stone is mostly hollow and the cube still reads as solid from outside. There is no base plate and no liner. Water that comes in with a wet brush runs to the floor of the well and dries there, because there is nowhere else for it to go and nothing in the way.

The two wells from above, and the honed side of the block.

We chose this stone here because its veining, brown and gold branching across a dark green ground, is strong enough to read at the size of a fist, where a quieter marble would look like plastic, and on a cube every face shows a different piece of that pattern. The finish is honed, not polished, so the block does not shine under bathroom light and fingers leave no trace.

It sits beside the tap, on the side of the basin the right hand reaches first. Two brushes stand in one well and a tube in the other, and the stone is heavy enough that it never slides. A thing used twice a day for years should be the plainest thing in the room, and this one is.

Beside the basin; the drawing. 100 mm cube, wells 89 mm deep.
